The Core i7-4930K was based on the legendary Ivy Bridge E and 22nm process, and it made its grand entrance into the gaming scene back in 2013. But now, it's time for the Core i7-5930K to take the throne and conquer the gaming world!
Can the Intel Core i7-5930K finally dethrone the king of mainstream CPUs, the FX-9590? It's a maybe. The Core i7-5930K doesn't quite reach the same single-core performance as its rival, but more games are starting to use all those threads, so who cares!
The Intel Core i7-5930K is an absolute monster, just like its 6 cores, 12 threads, and hefty price tag suggest. This is the top dog of mainstream processors, the king you've been waiting for. Games, video editing, 3D work – the Core i7-5930K handles it all with ease. Bow down to the king!
Heads up, with a simple overclock, the Core i7-5820K can actually perform almost as well as the Core i7-5930K, even when the Core i7-5930K is overclocked too. But the Core i7-5820K is $70 cheaper! Don't get us wrong, the Core i7-5930K is still a beast and offers more overall performance than AMD's FX-9590, but if you're on a budget, the cheaper sibling might be the better call.
The Core i7-5930K is the more expensive version of the Core i7-5820K, and it shows with its higher base and boost clock speeds: 3.5 GHz and 3.7 GHz, respectively. That's a nice boost in speed, but the real game changer is the higher power delivery (PPT). This lets the motherboard pump more juice (up to 142W) to the Core i7-5930K compared to the Core i7-5820K's limit of 140W. This extra power allows the Core i7-5930K to crank up the boost clocks even more aggressively, on both single and multiple cores. That means the performance gap between these two CPUs might be bigger than what the specs on paper suggest.
The Intel Core i7-5930K launched on Aug 2014 for $613, which is pretty much the same price as the last-generation Core i7-4930K. At least there's no crazy price hike this generation!
The high number of threads (over 7!) in the Intel Core i7-5930K makes it a monster for tasks that use all the cores at once (multi-threaded workloads), especially for the price. If you edit a lot of videos or work with giant spreadsheets, the Core i7-5930K will give you a noticeable performance boost.
The Intel has disabled the graphics on the Core i7-5930K, so it doesn't have any integrated graphics - just like the FX-9590. This makes the Core i7-5930K cheaper than the Core i7-4930K, even though the price difference might not be obvious at first glance. You can find the Core i7-5930K for $613 while the Core i7-4930K is still $670. That's a whopping 9% discount for the newer CPU! It's also cheaper than the FX-9590 which costs $495.92.
